Hoyne Brewing Co. – Dark Matter Review

The Dark Matter pours a deep chocolate brown colour with a thick and frothy head which leaves significant lacing on the glass’s sides. This beer smells of a chocolate and nut with a solid malt base and a touch of northwest hops to go with it. The taste starts off very smooth and light then a chocolate flavour starts to take over. This chocolate taste melds into a strong coffee finish that leaves the mouth waiting for more. Hoyne labels this beer as “Definitely not a stout, far from a porter, hardly a brown ale.” While this doesn’t leave a lot of options the taste resembles somewhere between a Brown ale and a Porter but not really either specifically. This beer has great dark flavour but tastes with the ease of a much lighter beer.

Alcohol – 5.3%
Size – 650ml bottles

We’ve had this at Steamworks in the past, not sure if we currently have it. I have to disagree slightly with your notes, or rather emphasize the shortcomings. When a beer claims to be ‘dark matter’, I’m expecting something pretty damn dark. When you say it leaves the mouth ‘waiting for more’, I completely agree, but not in a good way. It’s a bit thin and doesn’t quite satisfy and leaves you to go back to the bottle for more, but never quite finding what you’re looking for.

Thanks Brian. Very accurate comments. I was expecting something a little darker and full bodied but found it quite nice. Looking at the user ratings on this one other users agree with you. This is why we have the ratings and comments on the beers. Thanks for the feedback.

[…] Hoyne Brewing’s Dark Matter is a delicious mystery for many craft beer fans. The beer is not categorized by the brewery and sits somewhere between a Brown Ale and a Porter in colour and flavour. Despite not being easily categorized it is none-the-less delicious. Roasty flavours meld with chocolate hints that lead into coffee notes on the finish. The Dark Matter is in a class of its on for flavour and that is why it receives a score of 4.55 and 9th place. Best dark beer ever. Very smooth and delicious with a lovely toasted aftertaste with hints of chocolate.Goes great with a serving of kettle chips and malt vinegar. Definitely have to have a more than one.

HI. Want to take a couple of bottles of dark matter to Mexico on my vacation. What is the weight of a bottle and will it survive the trip.
    Thanks
    Don

      Hey Don,

A bomber bottle will weigh about a kilogram. Be sure to pack the bottles individually and put them in plastic bags. There is always a chance that they will break.
