Dead Frog Brewery – 2013 Commander Imperial Stout Review
As Dead Frog Brewery expands their craft beer selection comes the Commander Imperial Stout. This pitch black coloured beer is topped with 2+ fingers of thick, chocolate brown head leaving the glass with a thick lacing around the edges. The smell of this 10.5% ABV beer is strong with a combination of alcohol, molasses and oak. Tasting this beer it is a potent mix of flavours. The molasses tones cut the alcohol quite well but make for a very strong flavour profile. The molasses tones combine well with oak barrel aged notes that mellow the sharpness and add further depth to the taste. A hop bitterness is also present here but despite a rating of 65IBU it is fairly masked by the other, bolder flavours. This is a tasty beer but be careful, if you are not a fan of big, bold and extremely dark beers this is going to push you out of your comfort zone. The beer will mellow with time though and buying a bottle today for drinking a year from now is by no means a bad idea. This is a bottle best for sharing with a friends on a cold winter’s evening.

This beer is designed for cellaring, so it will be quite bold if consumed at the time of release. A year of aging in a cool, dark place will mellow it out and integrate the flavours. The 2013 Commander is currently at a good stage of drinkability for those whom have good impulse control or can find one in a store.
