Steamworks Brewing Co. – Black Angel IPA Review
Steamworks Brewing Company’s sampler 12 pack contains a secret called the Black Angel IPA. This black IPA is currently only available in the mixed-12 packs of Steamworks beer. From the 355ml bottle the Black Angel pours a deep, dark and opaque brown colour topped with two thick fingers of lacing head. The beer smells strong with northwest style hop bitterness and a malty, almost chocolate-like depth. The flavour is lighter than you may expect given the very dark colour. Off the bat a piney hop bitterness comes into play and is soon joined by a malty, rich character which cuts the sweetness and ads a slightly chocolate-like flavour to the mix. On the finish the hob bitterness lingers at the back of the tongue but is still more mild than you may expect. This beer resembles a combination of a fairly big IPA and a rather dry porter in a flavourful, strong and dark IPA package.
