Red Arrow Brewing Co. – Sweet Leaf IPA Review
The Red Arrow Brewing Company is located in Duncan BC and has quietly entered the rather noisy British Columbia craft beer scene. Midway between Victoria and Nanaimo, Duncan has stepped up in the ranks of sources for craft beer. From the bomber, 650ml bottle the Sweet Leaf IPA pours as a clear amber colour and is topped with nearly three fingers of relatively dense and lightly lacing head. From the beer comes an aroma big with hops. Piney, northwest hop flavour takes over the aroma with a lightly toasted malt aroma that sneaks in through the back door. The Sweet Leaf is big on hops and smells like a IPA true to the Northwest style. On the flavour side, The sweet leaf is mid-bodied and has a surprising balance between malt tones and big, bitter hops. A sap-like, piney bitterness hits the palate early making for a strong and intense IPA flavour. As the flavour progresses, a lightly toasted, lightly sweet malt flavour cuts through and balances the west-coast hops. The malt kick balances the finish leaving a malty-bitterness lingering at the back of the tongue. The Sweet Leaf is a big and bitter IPA but for those that like a bitter-punch this beer offers a little more to it with a nice malty balance and authentic BC flavour.
