Duncan BC’s Red Arrow Brewing has some bottles of their beer that have crept into greater Vancouver liquor stores. One such bottle is the Hop Shop Imperial IPA. This big, 95 IBU, 7.5% alcohol beer pours from the bomber bottle as a caramel colour that has some small bits in suspension. Topped with a thick finger of head the aroma from this beer is quite malty. The roasted malt character gives it a bit of an English-style IPA nose despite the big Northwest hop ingredients. Sipping the beer it has a smooth character and a toasty malt body. The big malt tones lead into a distinct bitterness that is piney, earthy and has light fruit notes that settle into the background. The Hop Shop is big in malt and hop and offers a big kick of flavour in an Imperial IPA package.
