Vancouver’s Missing Craft Beer Link – The Strathcona Brewing Co

Pizza, Beer and the Missing Link in Vancouver Craft Beer – Strathcona Brewing Co.

There are not a lot of spaces in Vancouver left to open a brewery. Looking at locations between East Vancouver and Gastown for instance there is really only one option. Nestled between the locations of Postmark and Callister you will find the area known as Strathcona. Since July 2016, you can also find the Strathcona Beer Company.

Located on Hastings Street next to Dan’s Homebrew the Strathcona Beer Company is a craft brewery and pizza house that offers a wide variety of both options. Stopping in for a visit the first thing that stands out is the branding and image that Strathcona is going for. A somewhat 33 Acres-like room has black and white call-outs, long tables, merch tucked to the side and a brewery viewing area behind the main bar. This is not a copy-job though with a strong pizza menu and other menu items available along with a beer list that Strathcona can call their own.

For having only recently opened, but made it through the initial flurry of activity, it was surprising to see a menu of 10 different beers. Even more surprising was seeing the styles available. Sessionable, light beers are the focus at Strathcona with a Pilsner, Kolsch and Lager all on the menu. These three styles are often an either-or question, not all of the above. Other beers worth mentioning include a Mild, Belgian Strong, Saison, ISA and Radler. There were no beers above the 6% mark though and no beers above 60 IBUs. This is a place for moderation and comparatively non-extreme craft beer.

This is not just another brewery though. Strathcona offers a fairly unique experience as being more of a craft beer lounge than a traditional tasting room or brewpub. The space is well lit, a decent size and offers a fairly unique product offering by BC craft beer standards. This is a great spot where you are likely to be able to find a seat, enjoy some craft beer and possibly even munch on some pizza at the same time.

And then there is the hidden benefit of Strathcona Brewing. Location… You may not think that this is the best location for a brewery. The Hastings area of Strathcona is a bit of a sketchy area and doesn’t have the most walk by traffic. But… This is a missing link in foot-powered beer tours for Vancouver. There is a magic number of around 10 for the number of minutes someone is willing to walk from brewery to brewery. The East Vancouver Breweries have been missing the link to downtown locations until now. While in the past it would take around 20 minutes to connect Callister Brewery to Postmark, Strathcona is very conveniently located in the middle. You can now start your journey in East Vancouver and do the 10 minute brewery hop all the way downtown.

Whether Strathcona is a checkpoint on your journey or the only destination for the day, it is worth stopping in for a pint, flight or growler. Swing on by and give their wide array of brews a try today!
