Powell St. Brewery – Contradiction Hallertau Blanc Dry Hopped Dark Sour Ale Review
Powell Street Brewery has released a dry hopped sour ale called Contradiction. This beer uses Hallertau Blanc hops and comes in at 6.0% and 10 IBUs. Pouring from the bomber bottle the beer is very dark, nearly black in colour and has two fingers of head which settles leaving slight lacing behind on the glass. The aroma is very tart with notes of cherry and plum. Tasting the beer it is quite acidic with a light plum like sweetness that cuts slightly. This beer is richer than your typical sour but remains light on the tongue. The hops are mild as well and don’t add a great deal to the flavour profile. Overall this is a rather sour beer with fruit tones that add a mild sweetness to balance the sour character.
Alcohol – 6.0%
IBU – 10
Hops – Hallertau Blanc
Size – 650ml

My girlfriend and I both tried Contradiction when we visited Victoria over the holidays and a Powell Street rep was giving tasting samples.
We are both fans of sour beers and we both thought Contradiction was great. I bought 3 bottles when we returned to Vancouver. I don’t recall thinking it was all that sour but maybe I’m so use to sour beers that something has to be really sour for me to notice :)
Sourness is a different measure for everyone. Just like IPAs a bitterness to each their own.
Would you consider this more of a Sour Stout? Sure looks like it.
It is more of a sour dark ale than a stout.
