Strathcona Beer Co. – Left Imperial IPA Review
Strathcona Brewing has released an Imperial IPA that is simply called “Left”. This beer is a whopping 10.4% alcohol and comes in an elegantly painted bottle. Pouring the beer it is hazy golden-orange in colour and a thick finger’s worth of head sits atop the beer. Leaving light lacing behind on the glass. The aroma is of grapefruit, mango and passion fruit with a slight dankness to the nose. Tasting the beer it has a creamy, thickness on the tongue and starts off with a slight booziness. Soon into the flavour the hop character builds with a tropical fruit, citrus and light pine character that is accompanied by both a bitterness and sweetness. The sweetness helps to balance the 100 IBUs and cut the boozy notes at the same time. At the same time though, 100 IBUs is likely a bit of a stretch as the bitterness is rather mild considering. Strathcona Brewing has done a great job with this beer and have released a very strong, yet somewhat balanced Imperial IPA.
